Trapped in the Critics

The following is from Stylus Magazine's "Top 50 Singles of The Year." If this had beat "Hung Up," then I really would have flipped out. It's still pretty high, though.

Singles it beat out: TWO Rachel Stevens songs, Lindstrom's "I Feel Space," Basement Jaxx's "Oh My Gosh," Girls Aloud's "Biology," Vitalic's "My Friend Dario," Missy's "Lose Control," Franz Ferdinand's "Do You Want To," LCD Soundsystem's "Tribulations," Sugababe's "Push the Button," Animal Collective's "Grass," Goldfrapp's "Ooh La La," Spoon's "I Turn My Camera On," and M83's "Don't Save Us From the Flames." Those are all fucking killer singles. Ugh.

It just boggles my mind how such shit can get such praise:

R. Kelly – Trapped In The Closet

If the idea of a continuous multi-song suite that has thus far expanded over 12 parts and 40 minutes appearing on a singles list bugs you, then you can consider this entry representative for Chapter 1. After all, it got the most radio and video-play of all the story's chapters, and remains one of its most cohesive and legitimately suspenseful. But if you have a problem with R.'s brilliant and frequently hilarious musical soap opera being praised at all, then that's where you're out of luck, because no one else at his level of fame came up with such a ballsy idea this year, and actually carried it out to such unpredictable extremes.
